Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments.
Teachers:
- Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.
- Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources.
- Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes.
- Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments.
PERSONAL REFLECTION
This first standard deals with today's teachers and how they are faced with the challenge of motivating students whose lives have been inundated with technology. Even preschoolers know how to use cell phones and computerized games so facilitating learning while keeping students engaged in classroom activities now requires both careful planning and a lot of creativity on the part of the instructor. Communication capabilities exist on a global basis and collaboration is no longer seen as something to be frowned upon but can be incorporated and encouraged into any learning environment.
To meet this standard, students need to be able to apply knowledge in a real world setting much sooner than past generations and working together with others only increases the potential for learning this skill. Instructional materials need to present information in such a way as to capture and maintain student engagement throughout the learning process. IT 567 covers the basic design elements of contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity (affectionately known as C.R.A.P.). To demonstrate proper design techniques, my event flier and brochure are listed below along with my IT 567 blog entries covering these elements. . Just click on the image to view the item in full size. The slide presentation is an example of how digital tools can give traditional methods of delivery a more engaging look and encourage students to remain focused on the material. Having students reflect on coursework via web blogs is one way to use collaborative communication as a learning tool. Posting my own entries and reading/responding to those of my classmates gave me opportunities to improve my work. I have included two of my own blogs as artifacts for this standard.

FUTURE LEARNING GOALS
I look forward to applying instructional design concepts in my position as Office Manager and Administrative Assistant to a new department chair arriving in 2016. I am better prepared to contribute more in the planning and scheduling of future courses by offering more dynamically appealing learning tools and instructional materials. I plan to create even more websites for both personal and work-related topics.
